Like many modern cars (especially Diesels) the DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) is often part of the problem and can be expensive to replace along with the clutch.......

I had an R50 One for a while which was so fun then a 2007 Clubman which was alright but a bit boring. I'd love a convertable next with an Aero kit

To me the BMW Minis look good as one can immediately notice them from the usual mundane jelly moulds on the road today. Especially the early models as I would find myself looking at the oncoming car expecting to see another real mini only to see a BINI.
I`m almost over the whole BMW thing actually calling the cars minis because owned the brand but to me and many others there are real minis and BMW badge engineered MINIs. I dabble in vintage motorcycles and its the same thing with real Royal Enfields, Triumphs, Nortons, AJS .
I have got to hand it to BMW they have made a very successful brand creating a lifestyle as opposed to the normal bland A-B transport being offered today, they are funky and fun to the generations that missed the real thing ;)
My problem is the cars are so dam big with tiny cabin space they are not practical as a family car yet they share the same proportions, I quickly realized a Golf had the same external dimensions but had five doors and something you can actually call a boot.
As for reliability they are all the same unless you buy Lexus or Honda as Japan knows how to make reliable electrics Bosch don`t.
All modern cars are filled with crap you just don`t need. KIS is a term I use a lot when designing one off tools and jigs for work. Keep It Simple.
I had a 205 diesel that pushed out less HC than a Focas and at 314,000 miles the rear axle finally put the car into retirement, no problems, no breakdowns, no sensors, no DMF, no DPF you get the picture. The lacquer falling off the roof and bonnet was the only reason it was not fixed.
A friends BMW mini had paint problems and the usual gearbox issues so much so that the dealer replaced the car with a new one free of charge after 12 months, unfortunately the next one suffered the same issues. His daily drive is Japanese now.
I have owned a couple of early BMW mini coopers as i picked them up for less than a £1000 and sold them on and sorry but they just seem a little boring and the fact you can pick them up in great condition for around £1200 - £1500 kind of says it all as you would be hard pushed to get a good 205 for that.
That said if I find a 2001 bmw mini I will find a space in the shed for it as an investment, as for the rest its not for me .
