Took the carb off and cleaned everything, the car still won't start and now the jet's stuck so the choke won't pull out, seriously losing my mind with this blasted car.
I bet the jet was sticking before .. which is why you have sooty plugs
And its not only fuel starvation that makes the fail to start but over-fuelling too.

It won't budge at all now, I'll take it back off and see if I haven't put the jet in correctly

It now starts but the revs keep on increasing until I shut the engine off, I'm at a loss about what to do.

Is the throttle stuck open? what rpm was it idling at?

Hook it up to a co meter and stroboscope, undo the throttle cable, set the idle and then reattach throttle cable, happy days.

Sorry I was really stupid and put the butterfly holding the rod that connects to the jet in the wrong possition so the revving is sorted now, it also runs now but it sounds like 3 cylinders at best, I don't think it could get any rougher. I've taken the carb apart and checked the throttle and the lines too and they seem fine, needle's in properly and the jet's now functioning correctly after rectifying my silly mistake. the fuel lines are fine too as the cylinder that hokds the float, I can't remember what it's called has petrol in it and the float itself works fine. Everything else in the carb seems to be functioning well too so could it be dirty fuel? Otherwise would the only other thing it could be be the distributor or spark plugs?

Put some n fuel in and new spark plugs on and it runs a bit better now, quite slow to pick revs up though

True, I think I'll see about doing that as the next thing, are there any in particular that you'd recommend?

Personal advice is to contact Accuspark and get a complete distribution and coil, ready to fit...
