I'm pretty sure I've set the clearances correctly.

Seeing as the head has been machined, and nothing was said about leaded fuel, (and it's a 1991 ca ..., not that that guarantees anything about the head) I feel reasonably confident fuel type shouldn't be an issue.

I've never even heard of valve recession.

Valve recession is where the seat and or the valve are wearing thus allowing the valve to "walk" towards the rocker arm closing the valve clearance.

The valve seats have been machined, amongst other things, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Thankfully the engine us now running pretty well. So I just need to fix the speedo cable and the rattle from the timing cover. ;-)

Something often overlooked is that oil is also under pressure onto the tappet (cam follower) this oil also drops down and lubricates the camshaft.

The only reason for running a newly cammed engine and maintaining it at a higher revs is because the point load is higher the slower the engine turns.

At 2500rpm and above, the oint loads are low enough to wear in the followers and cam lobes without any excessive wear until the 2 surfaces have polished together, which takes about 30 minutes.  Then dropping the revs down to a normal tickover will not then wear out the parts concerned.
