as for bio etanol dont worry about the corrosion, worry about the compression, the corrosion will take years to do any real damage, the pistons wont get touched because they will be covered in carbon skum from years of petrol, and the engine block is cast iron ok there, the bearings might get attacked after a while but oil is cheap enogh (stuff i use 5 pound a gallon) and should be changed regularly anyway. its not like minis are hard to get parts for anyhow, the valve guides are not going to get worn by the use of e85 any more that the use of unleaded, as for the power output that will drop unless you add water to the mix, to make the car part steam engine (use an aray of aquarium foggers) did you know you can run a petrol engine such as a gx160 on 80% water (boiled in the kettle add a generous ammount of washing up liquid) and petrol with a slug of metahanol and acetone (thats nail varnish remover and methalated sprits to laymen) i used to run this mix in my go kart when i was skint one day and wanted to go out for a rag, i found i got more power out of it that petrol, you need to strat and warm up the engine throughly before using the mix, when i first discovered this my window cleaner was amazed to see me pouring a kettle steaming into the fuel tank and i was amazed to see that i could run the engine for another couple of hours and about 2 litres of water more, simply amazing anyone have a gx160 give it ago you wont belive me til youve tried it. tho its a b***h to get the engine started the next time you come to use it because u have to drain the carb fully because the water seperates out of the mix and goes to bottom of the carb where the fuel pick up is.
e85 will never replace petrol, it damages the environment more than petrol too, you know how much pesticide is used on non food crops, and how much crude is used for transport .. alot.
the thing that will replace petrol will be aluminum in my opinion,or pos zinc it has a very high energy density and is easy to re cycle, you can run engines off it if u use a rotating stainless drum with a wire feed conected to a high voltage source underwater,
this creates alot of hydrogen and you can make very high power batteries, but they have probs atm due to gunk on the plates and shelf life
also you can use scrap aluminum with thorium? as a catalyst and when u add it to water it breaks down into hydrogen and aluminum oxide you could put this strait into a vaccum line on a carb or inj for gains in mpg and power and reduces smog too
