Hi,

I have just put engine back into my 1994 Sprite, a 1.3 SPi

Problem is it is refusing to start. There does not seam to be any fuel getting to the engine, the fuel pump does not sound to be running.

I tried connecting the fuel pump terminal direct to the battery and the pump ran fine and fuel came from the lines.

I have not changed any of the electrics when i put the engine back in.

Hope someone can help.

Adam

Check the inertia switch has not tripped.

This is the black, square body, round rubber top device located on the bulkhead to the right of two yellow relays, on the right as you look at the engine bay. Push the middle of the top down and listen, if it clicks, then it had tripped and the engine 'should' now start.

If that was not the problem then you have switched off the alarm imobiliser???

Other than that its down to a fuse, most common is the fuel pump fuse. Dependant on fuse box type its either an inline fuse or one of the blade type fuses in the multy way fuse box on later cars.

Oh and check the connections of the inertia switch, the switches themselves are prone to failing because of location.

Other points

Did you replace the clutch when the engine was out?

The crank position sensor has been reconnected?

The distributer has been installed and set up correctly?

Remember this, the fuel pump will only run a few seconds when the ignition is switched on. The ECU then holds off the pump until it senses from the crank position sensor that the engine is rotating.

Some more information required to get to the bottom of your problem. Such as, why the engine was removed in the first place?

Thanks for the reply, The problem seams to be getting worse, I have recharged the battery, but now when i try start the engine i get some smoke coming from below the ecu!!!

Any ideas, the only thing i can think of is that i had the negative battery terminal not tightened up. Could this be causing this???

Cheers Adam

Tried it again tonight, still no joy. No power getting to the pump, where is the fuse likely to be?? Checked all the inline ones behind the injection unit and the ones in the box.

Can you get a fault code reader to check the ecu on a mini??

Hope someone can help, i need to get the car running again. Adam

Do you still get this? have you had a look at the loom coming away from the ecu for damage. Smoke is a massive indicator for a duck-off short!

Why was the engine out in the first place? Just to know what its had done
