Thats pretty expensive though. You can buy an android tablet for £50... but you would hope the commercial product is better.

The hardware probably costs pennies and the rest is for the software.

While that's true, you have to make sure the android tablet supports USB on the go, AND you still have to cobble together your cable.

ECU plug is white, green is for alarm and if it's JDM there isn't an alarm.

Reminder for everyone only provide advice based on facts.

There's a reason that the code readers for these are expensive, it's quite difficult!

Personally I prefer the Sykes Pickavant ACR or Crypton ACT as the systems are more robust that a trying to cobble something together, but that's me.

pscan works on macs.  I've been considering one of these since I'm also on a mac.

You can buy a Crypton ACT system for that kind of money and it can reset the ECU too.

Believe me, I've been looking for a real code reader.  Finding one that is complete AND functional AND the seller is willing to ship to the USA is a tough task.  The fact that I'm even considering spending £177 + shipping on a sketchy cable is proof of that.

If everyone with an SPI tried to get a hand held reader they'd soon cost more than an SPI!

Hehe, yep. There are a few on ebay at the mo though, not all with rover pods and lead, but those bits are currently on the 'bay too, I got lucky with mine and got it for a decent price with all the bits I needed.

The code readers are not cheap

and yet standard ones for modern cars only cost about 20-30 gbp

It's great to see people trying to work round the problem with the skills that they have

lovely cars but not being able to 'check' the ecu on a budget is always a bit problematic

Standard code readers are cheap because they are generic and give the EOBD2 information, if you want specifics they are expensive to mimic the manufacturers gear (FIAT Examiner, Mercedes STAR, etc)
SPi were before the standard came in and in common with other manufacturers Rover had their own specification.
The code readers have gone up in price as fewer of them exist. As garages cleared out their old Sykes Pickavant, Crypton and Snap on sets there was a sweet point when they were cheap but now you are lucky if they are less than a few hundred pounds.
They are still out there if you do your homework and watch the auctions, realistically like anything else the market dictates the pricing.
Don't forget that the Sykes Pickavant ACR was around £500 when new with the GM, Ford and Rover pods plus leads and the last ones were over £1000 including the latest MAP pods
