Just in the process of cleaning up the front upper shock absorber mounts.

The end of the thread of the captive bolt is rusty.

Managed to get the old nut off with some difficulty but the new nut won't go on.

I thought about getting a die chaser but what size and pitch thread will it be?

Alternatively, has any one got any tips on cleaning what is only about 5mm on the end.

Regards

Mike.

The 'Pin' over which you slide the shocker eye?

3/8" UNF.

Wire brush, brake/clutch cleaner and elbow grease. Then lashings of copper grease.

If it's really bad then replace it for safety's sake

You can get thread files. It's a 4 sided bar with different threads on each face.

You will struggle to get a wire brush into a captive nut.

I think he means the bracket that holds the shock that bolts to inner wing? Could be wrong though

Yeh I know, they are held in with captive nuts and loose bolts usually.

Yeah but the bolt on the bracket is what's causing grief I think.

The loose bolt is new as far as I can tell so its the captive nut he mentioned was rusty that must be at fault.

Thanks for all your prompt replies.

It is the pin that the top of the shock slides on.

I've added a couple of pics to show the problem.

I think the bolt is welded so I would imagine I'd need to replace the whole mount as I don't have the equipment to reweld.

Can you not run a die over the rusty part of the thread?

Think they are about £10 new, I would just replace them.
