1275 Breather System - Connecting To Carb

Best Answer driftz , 07 September 2016 - 01:29 PM

Iv done a very similar thing for the same reasons. No reason not to if your not using it for coolant

Hi!

I'm (still) putting my engine together, although the end is in sight :)

I would just like to run this past your collective expertise just in case I'm making a glaring mistake in my breather system.  I've done lots of searching of past topics, and haven't found anyone who has connected it like this, so just wanted to check there isn't a really obvious reason for that!

To try and cut down on pipework and keep the engine bay neat, I've been planning to connect both my timing cover and clutch housing breathers to the water heated inlet manifold, using it as a Y-piece.  The neat-freak in me has always hated these being left unconnected to anything.  I've tapped a hole in the centre (only into the water section), and added a nozzle, and connected it via a short pipe into the carb.  Any obvious problems with doing this?

(I don't actually have any breathers on the engine yet, so you'll have to use some imagination for where the pipes connect to :)

Thanks!

no problems just possibly more things to undo when you need to remove things.

Sorry I can't see the point. I'm all for modding to gain some advantage, but why not wait until you have the breathers on and pipe it correctly?

Fab, thanks, just wanted the reassurance :)  Am I right in thinking that the engine will be drawing in air through the rocker cover cap?  My old engine had the breathers with those little mini air filter type things venting directly into the engine bay, so I'm hoping this will smell a lot better and I'll have fewer headaches after long drives!

no it draws air through the Carb.

it breathes through the breathers, the cap is sometimes a breather but not all.

I wouldn't really call it modding as such, since I have no original system.  Just making the best job from bits I've already got really, and didn't really see the point in spending on the plastic y-piece and tapered hose system.

Ah ok, so all the pressure comes from the blowby then.  Gotcha.

Yep, I've heard really good things about it so got the kit with the filter and stubstack.  This'll be my first 1275 (well, 1330) build, so won't actually be able to compare it to anything other than my old 60bhp 998.  Can't wait to get it started now!

The only ~problem~ I see (if you want to call it that) is that the take off for the hoses on the Oil Seperators are 1/2" and the pipes on the Manifold are 5/8". I've usually found proper Emission hose either won't stretch that much or others that will but perish fairly quickly as a result and then split where they've been stretched.

Yeah I noticed that the emissions hose really doesn't have much give in it, even with plenty of washing up liquid.  I ended up replacing the inlet take offs with some slightly smaller stainless steel tubing I found lying around.  I'll definitely keep an eye out for any splits, but hopefully with it being proper emissions hosing, it should be ok.

The biggest thing I wanted to check was that I'd got the principle of the breather system right, and that it's going to do what it should be doing.   I could never understand why the later system had that y-piece with different sized outlets and different sized hoses on either side of the engine.

Would it not be an asset to have hot water flowing through the inlet manifold on cold winter mornings, as originally designed, allowing the engine to come off choke that much sooner?

Great idea actually. I Have a Brass Y piece and everything looks More cluttered. Might try your approach!

The Y-piece oddly was never up-dated. It was originally contrived for Twin SUs, that have the CCV Ports and a single Oil Separator.
