See my other threads to find out why I'm asking this! I have all the usual tools- sockets, spanners, torque wrench, impact wrench etc but wondered if any speciality tools are required to strip/rebuild a series engines and gearboxes? For instance piston ring compressors or any bearings that need to be press fitted?

Flywheel puller.

Bearing puller

Plastiguage.

Feeler gauges

Dial gauges

Ring compressors.

Blow torch.

All mentioned in the Haynes manual.

Ball joint splitters pot jot poppers.

Cv boot tie tools.

Imperial equivalent of a 34 and 38mm socket . Those dont come in the std sets. :)

I thought general advice was to use a micrometer as it can also give an indication of roundness?

Add micrometer and vernier gauges as well.

And a good steel edge/rule.

I'm serious about needing sellotape......you will need it on the rebuild.

what for, to get all the iron filings off my clothes...?!

I have never needed sellotape for a rebuild. I must have used alternative methods. Where would you need it?

A big hammer... for hitting the sellotape when things go wrong. 😀

I found a decent stand with a magnetic base was really useful when using the dial gauge for measuring end float and cam timing.

 

It's a bit of a specific one, but I believe there's a specialist spring compressor that you can get (or make) for changing the bendix on an inertia starter motor.  It's one of those things that you only find out when you need to do it :)

To cover the splines of the primary gear to stop them damaging the seal.  Sellotape with some oil on stops any damage that sharp edges of gear teeth could cause.  I think there is a proper tool for the job, but I've used sellotape and it does the job....think I read about it in Vizard's book....or maybe the Haynes manual.

Well hopefully you won't have iron filings on your clothes during the rebuild..........see above comment for the real reason.
