Well, as my girlfriend's driving little Austin, she seems to get headaches etc from the engine noise :w00t:

Now there is no dash whatsoever at the moment, but thats in hand...

...I was just thinking there's a lot of space behind where the dashboard will go, and I could perhaps 'fill' that with some sort of sound-proofing material.

Is this wise? :proud:

I was just thinking along the lines of foam, polystyrene, bubble-wrap etc!

Any ideas??

Joe

P.S. I suggested ear muffs but that idea went down like a lead ballon :w00t:

the sound deadening mat that goes under the bonnet along the top behind the carb is very good at cutting out the noise, fitting a new one is worth it as its better than the standard foam one. i would try that first.

Go down to B&Q and buy a roll of the grey carpet underlay for about £25, which is slightly ticker than the tailored felt kits, which the one I bought didn’t fit the way I would of likes. So I’ve done the whole of my mini in the stuff including floors, boot, roof and two layers behind the dash, helps cut down the noise and keep the cabin warm during the colder months.

Bitumen roof flashing tape ( on the inside two layers on the bulkhead ) you could have a v8 in the engine bay and not hear it

k that's an exageration, but will cut out a LOT of engine noise ( do the whole car and it'll sound like a merc )

plus roof banding is cheap as chips :w00t: not like dynamat or "proper" sound proofing! and it does the job just as well.

Ah right, thanks people!

Is THIS the kind of thing you mean?

Does it just stick on like duck tape then? Is it likely to trap moisture anywhere once i've stuck two layers on?

Oh, and where do I buy it, B&Q etc??

Thanks for your help!

Joe :w00t:

I wish we had that tape over here! I've never seen anything comparable at our home centers and DIY places. It sure sounds cheaper than Dynamat.

Dude...

I got some stuff off ebay called "FATMAT"
it is sticky one side and has a layer of ally foil on t'other, the foil helps turn the vibration (noise) into low level heat....

I have used 1 roll (£38 aprox) and would recon another 2 to do the whole inside + boot and maybe under bonnet (not the roof)
my mate had the same problem as u and used the fatmat, it works very well blocking out the noise and the suck of carb

But this stuff is real heavy

good luck with your choice!!

The mighty Guesswork is right about the roof flashing, it's bloody brilliant at sound deadning.

with regards to trapping moisture.... it'll only 'trap' moisture, if you don't apply it to a dry surface!

Thanks for the replies everyone! :w00t:

Well, it would seem the flashing tape idea is winning at the moment, it seems a lot cheaper too!

Cool, thats what I thought but just wanted to make sure...

Cheers,

Joe :(

4 rolls of 225mm x10m will do the entire car, doors, floor, boot rear quarters bulkhead, and add another if yu want to do the roof... Will cost about 14-15 quid a roll from Homebase, B&Q, Wicks etc etc etc

If you want to get a realy good fit ( ie no air pockets ) use a heat gun to gently soften it into place.. I've done two cars with it now and swear by it if you want a quiet car..
