I have the EVO 001.
LOVE IT!
Will fit a and A+.

The evo 2 was a bit much on the road according to the guys at minispares, the evo001 was their choice for a mg metro-ish engine :)

hope it helps :)

It will go into A & A+ engines.

Personally I would never buy a cam without seeing a detailed specification and cam graph.

It might say 'more power than a 286 below 5000 rpm, but most cams will give that as the 286 gives peak power at 640 rpm and only pulls strongly from about 4800 rpm.

IMHO there are far too many claims made about 'new' cams for the old A-series engine. In practice all they do is move the power & torque bands about a bit whilst giving, maybe, a bit more or less power/torque here and there. Much of the gains in performance are down to the quality of the engine building and the care and accuracy with which the gas-flowing of the head has been done.

In my opinion, one of the best cams you can fit into a road mini, is the SW5 cam from swiftune. Not o expensive, and they know a thing or two about tuning a series engines.

Yes, I agree and it's what cheeses me off and turns me away from some of the cams out there these days. Almost seems they are trying to hide something.

Having blurb like the example above is fairly meaningless as they don't specify what their test engine is (if in fact it has ever been in a test engine) and what's been done to it to arrive at the figures they get.

I have not worked with the SW5, but I do believe it is on a par with the MG Metro and Kent 266 cams, both of which I have had excellent results with.

For a road car it is torque that's needed, not maximum power. All the cam manufacturers will claim that they have some sort of 'magic' cam, but in the end we are dealing with a 60+ year old engine and there have been so many cams, both production & prototypes, that little is truly 'new'. What you gain in one aspect with one, you lose in another aspect when comparing it to another.

Sorry to sound a bit cynical, but the cam manufacturers all want to sell their cams to us.

I am about to re-build a 1994 Mini Monte-Carlo engine for a young man who seized it up. What cam do you recommend?

The evo1 is a bit more cam than an mg metro. Mine pushed out 85 or so bhp and torque with a decent head. Was superb on the road - I have another to go in my next build.

Been looking at the spec and looks similar to old 731 that I already have.

Also got 1.5 roller rockers.

Notice they have to choices the evo 1 is for without.is it just the lift difference?

I can't help you here I am using the SW5 with a ported head and lightened flywheel

the engine is super smooth at all rpms, low idle is very smooth - but it's a mild cam as far as I know

the flywheel makes the engine feel lighter if that makes any sense

not much point changing the cam unless you get the head done too

Hi folks

forgive the thread revival and the silly question. I am replacing my standard 1275 metro (12HD09) camshaft and followers as the followers were showing signs of pitting.

I am looking at the minispares evolution camshafts as they are reasonably priced and I am not particularly interested in out and out performance, this will be a car for pootling to picnics and cruising to the beach

With these "performance" camshafts do I need to uprate the valve springs etc?

I'd honestly prefer a new standard replacement camshaft so it doesn't stress any other components any more - are they still available? I'm having difficulty finding one.

thanks in advance :highfive:
