OK I have fitted the Cork type with some sealant I will keep my eye on them when it's back in and driving. Thanks Tom

They will be as good as they ever get with some sealant. The cork itself is very slightly permeable, which is why I suggested that they leak slightly.  You will not lose any measurable amount of oil. it is just that they don't necessarily stay completely clean and dry for a high mileage. It is more of a cleanliness than a functional thing.  My 998 with rubber gaskets stayed clean, the earlier 998 and 848 did not.

 

That applies to the rocker cover too.

 

But if you have the old style open breather, I suppose that seepage through the cork will not be the greatest contributor to general messiness! It does stop rusting of the lower bulkhead region...
