Waterpump pumps the coolant around, radiator cools it and thermostat 'regulates' the Flow of water by opening more when the coolant gets hotter with a maximum opening at +- 88°?
My guess is that the previous thermostat was opening too soon/too quick thus cooling too much, toghether with the alloy rad that, for a given opening of the thermostat, cools More than the copper rad where the thermostat was designed for (maybe an alloy rad needs a Different thermostat calibration)?
So the water cooled too much => thermostat closed => heats up and repeat, like The thermostat is almost bouncing ?
Or am I overthinking? :P

I'm sure (hoping for your sake) that's just a loose draft,,,,,

Now I wonder if it could have something to do wxith the removal of the heater outlet? Less hot water from cyl 4 reaching the temp sensor?

how why and what?

heater outlet?  blocked off would lead to more hot water to the standard temp sensor.

Indeed blocked.
thought it was the other way round with some people saying CYL 4 gets less flow with it blocked :)

Timing at 10 degrees, evo001 cam from minispares.
Std 3 Core radiator with standard plastic fan, standard 10-13mm spacer .
Mixture looks good too.IMG_20161022_184958_zps18ljp518.jpg

I have mentioned this before but I'm going to say it again..... It's as if the thermostat is working incorrectly and out of it's operating temperature for example opening too early and very slow to close and properly seal shut.

I'd be whipping that out of the car with a known thermostat that operates, put it in a sauce pan with a thermometer and gently warm it up and compare.

Very strange

Produced by Gates gates part nr th12888g1

sold as 88 degrees by a local shop, dont know the age but I guess that wont matter too much?

So test it. Pan of water and a thermostat for opening temp and see how it moves as temp goes up.

closed of and you have less cooling effect on the engine and risk over heating (comp engine) with it closed is stays in the engine for longer so gets hotter.

Another thought.... Does your water pump have the little bypass hose connected to the steel pipe on underside of the cylinder head near the thermostat?

If you don't have a cylinder head with this by pass hose, have you drilled the thermostat around the edge with 6 x 3mm holes?
If not....You need to!

I'm clutching at straws now, because I think we've covered about everything.

Assuming the Temp Gauge is in the ball park, it all looks close to right to me for a 820 t'stat, but definitely on the cold side for an 880 t'stat.

I know you've tested your gauge at 1000 C, but is it linear?

Buy yourself one of those IR guns and check the temp of the top header tank.
