I had to re use the original thrusts as the new ones were far too tight (diff was locked). I had no idea you should machine down the fibre thrusts......surely they'd disintegrate if they're machined!!??

I semi to recall that someone here found a week or two back that Bull Motif stocked diff side covers with reamed bushes fitted at a reasonable price.

There are 2 thicknesses available in the thrusts, the one I linked up is the thinner one (0.035 - 0.038"). The other is quite a bit thicker at 0.048".

The ones I make I do from 1.0 mm sheet which is near enough 0.040".

On assembly, some have locked up on me, I just grind the pips on the Inboard Ends of the Output shafts until I get a few though clearance. It's none too critical as when driving, the shafts can only thrust out, in fact for many years on Metro Production, the Diff Centre piece wasn't even fitted.

Ok, so I'm even more confused! The bronze bush isn't touching anything, yet I'm being told to replace them. The thrusts don't affect the wobble (or do they?) but I'm being told to replace them. The cage bush needs replacing, but I'm not sure which one that is, and all at the same time, it's the pot joint that holds it central inside the bronze bush which I'm also told needs replacing even though it might not be worn!!?? :S

The Bronze Bushes that I think the other guys have suggested to replace aren't only the ones in the diff side covers, but also the ones on the Crown Wheel and the Diff Hemisphere.

These;-

you can see it in this CW here

and I would also suggest checking those in the Diff Side Covers as if they are worn, they'll cause the Inside Bushes (that I've mentioned here ^) and thrusts to wear pretty quickly.

<EDIT: What I've suggested in regards to replacing the thrusts - The worn thrusts won't be why the outputs are wobbling, but will be worn as a result of them wobbling. >

Minivanman, the point is you need to take it all out and look at what's worn and replace as required. Its not a simple job of replace one part. Parts work together, if worn it usually means those that work with it are also worn.

Thanks chaps.

Looks like a diff teardown and inspect is required then!

Will report back when I get that far.

Diff apart last night. There's about 0.007" clearance on cage and crown wheel bushes. New ones to be fitted by local engine machine shop soon.
What should the clearance be on them?
And what should the clearance be on the diff side cover/pot joint bushes?

Aim for 0.001" on both.

Interesting that the well-known engineering "thou" is the right sort if clearance to aim for in many moving parts. It seems to work just about anywhere and is achievable by any decent machine tool and operator. The Europeans are at a slight disadvantage, not having a thou as their base measurement. "0.0254 mm" or even rounded off to "0.025 mm" just does not seem so natural somehow.
