I've been looking at those small neodymium magnets on eBay and just wondered as above really??
Is anyone using them?
Views and thoughts welcome :)

away's have done - don't know if they do anything
should hold the fine metal bits
on a steel sump , I put one next to the drain & remove at oil change - so it washes any particles out the sump

They can only hold so much crap against a certain flow. The more they hold the less area there is for the oil to flow which in return recuces the amount the magnets can hold.
And in this case any metal that they do collect has already done the damage.
My thought was to use these with regular oil and filter changes.

I've always used a strip of magnets around the filter, have the long reach sump plug and the gearbox mag trap - take the point as regards releasing a clump but my opinion is that better to have them as is - as ok particles may have gone through the pump before getting caught - but wont repeatedly go through - which certainly would cause damage.....
As said regular oil changes and swarf removal vital....

All good points made there guys, I think I'm going to probably buy the band that fits and clamps around the oil filter, the thought of several loose magnets being jarred may release a clump of filings and defeating the object, I think I'll go with regular oil changes as well.
Just as a matter of interest, what mileage do you change your oil and filters?
Many thanks
Neal
Oh, forgot to mention that my oil filter housing does not have a bypass valve fitted.

I wouldn't go any further than 3000 miles before changing the oil and filter.
Also...

Cracking link!
I think the sump magnet, the oil pick up magnet in the rear of the gearbox and an oil filter magnet strap and 3000 mile oil and filter changes and magnet cleaning for me is the way to go.
Now, has anyone got any inside info to the best oil filters with regard to filtration and flow capabilities??
I was told years ago that BMW used to use re-labelled COOPERS oil filters, I don't if there is any truth in this?
Anyone care to comment?
