Hi;

I have finished my restoration and was about to fit the door check straps however they do not fit!!

The check strap - as far as I know - should slide through the middle of three slits in the A Post Stiffener and the pin onto the door. The Check Strap will not fit through the middle slit.

At first I thought it was too much paint but after scraping it off GGGRRRRRRR it still did not fit.

Both Stiffeners were from Mini Spares and were the better quality ones (I think), the check straps are the original old ones from the car (they are both slightly different).

Any ideas and do I need these for an MOT?

Thanks

You don't need them for an MOT but you certainly do need them, or something equally effective, to prevent damaging the A-post structure by carelessly opened doors.

And yes I think that your description of how it is supposed to fit is correct. I would suggest that use of a thin file is called for, or maybe a Dremel, followed by retouching the primer and paint.

With the parts supply situation as it is now, you will get used to checking the fit of every part at as early a stage as possible. It is downright annoying, but that is how it is these days.

I see what may have happened. The thick pressing which presumably comes already attached to the stiffner has been made wrongly, with the sides of the U too close together.

As you say, there isn't much that can be filed. But hopefully just enough, if you take the slot out to exactly the width between the flats.

Or I may just fabricate a new Door Check Strap? For the time being some string :-)

Yes, but isn't that the thickest piece of metal in the shell? It will need a strong screwdriver!

Making a new strap may indeed be easier....
