Hi all,

I know it's my first post, sorry to chime straight in. I'm after advice regarding a 1980 1275 GT that's been stored in my mother-in-laws garage for quite a long time (probably since the early 90's).

She doesn't drive so I have no idea how or why it got there, I should ask really, but she's now looking for a bit of money and is prepared to get rid of it if she can.

I have said to not sell it for a measly figure she was offered from a guy at work. I have said to hold off, I would like to investigate as much as I can about it, buy some bits to get it running, clean it up and let it drive away from the sale (or even buy it myself if I grow too attached to it).

Now, first issue is, she has no logbook, and doesn't even know if it was properly transferred to her from a friend in the 80's. I've tried to find information about it through DVLA, RAC and a couple of other online checks but they all say no information found on this vehicle. When did digital records begin? And could the last use of this car have been before then?

Car is in relatively good condition as its been in the garage, including having it's original number plate.

Where do we stand with all this?

Any help appreciated. I hope to become part of the community!

Thanks,

That is a good start. I would try this for £25 and see how it goes.

As above apply for log book for £25.

1980 car should be on the DVLA computer but when you search the online database with reg number below it may be listed under Austin, Morris or Leyland Cars as vehicle make:-

https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

This should also give you the date when it was last on the road and taxed.

Thanks ever so much for your replys guys.

Right so, we have a hit on the DVLA website. Make was down as Austin-Morris. Tax expired 1st September 1996. All the other info looks fine.

So because it is on their system, does that mean there is a registered keeper attached to it?

If my mother-in-law is not the registered keeper on record, will they not issue a log book to her in her name?

How does the original owner surfacing at a later date and wanting it back possibility work with this? And would the DVLA name the current keeper to me? (I think we should be OK if the recorded keeper is still my mother-in-laws friend, I'm almost certain she wouldn't try to claim it back)

You'd think there would be some sort of check that the car exists and is in your possession, otherwise there's nothing to stop you trawling old pictures for deceased tax exempt Mini's applying for log book and ringing yourself a bitza.  I've no idea if there is though.

Here's the thing, a V5c DOES NOT prove who owns the car, just the registered keeper, it actually says so on the document I think. Anyone with a car on HP does not own the car until the final payment is made for example but you would have the v5c in the keepers name wouldn't you, that person has no right to sell the car as they don't own it, the bank does.

If the person applying for the Log Book is not the existing registered keeper the DVLA will send a letter to the last known keepers address........if there is no reply from them within 2 weeks claiming the car....... then the DVLA will send you a new Log Book/V5c document in your name as the new registered keeper,

There is no check that the car exists but as mentioned in my other post above the existing keeper is contacted by post......but if they do not reply, have moved address, passed away or have no interest in the car anymore then a new V5 document iis issued to the new keeper.

Several famous long gone Mini's and their reg numbers were resurrected and reconstructed in the 1980's using this method and sold on as the original cars often to Japan, etc .......the DVLA are said to be more aware of this now and BMH (Heritage) are more careful with releasing the chassis nunbers, etc of historic/famous/valuable Mini's as a result!

As it appears from what you've said that your mother in law is still in contact with her friend then just ask the friend to apply for a new V5c as it seems, by what your saying, that the car is probably still in her name.

If the V5c was changed to your mother in laws name back in the 80's then she will get a letter from the DVLA asking her if she is still the registered keeper or the DVLA will just send your mother in laws friend the new V5c. Will still cost someone £25 though!

Ah right I see, I'm with you all.

I suppose as long as chassis numbers are not given out willy nilly to the public, supplying the number when applying for the logbook could be classed as slight proof that the car is in your possession.

I will be speaking with her today at some point so I'll pass over this information and get the logbook applied for. The friend is in fact her best mate, they see each other all the time so as long as it was indeed just passed over between the two, I'm sure we'll have no problem.

Where is the chassis number located on this car by the way?
