How much movement in the chain have you got? Single or duplex?

by the way End float is best measured with a DTI ..

Chain in pretty good, I would say that it's tight enough just with the two bolts in loose without any extra pressure. Simplex chain. There will be roughly 3-4mm movement on the side away from the tensioner, that's if you REALLY put effort into it.

Yep, how much should it move? Haynes just say refit tensioner and tighten bolts.

Well chains do stretch especially simplex and they aren't expensive when you think about it. The tensioner will take up the slack but if too much it will alter your timing.

Why not just fit a new one and take the worry out!

The last time I looked at one, the tensioner, comprising a neoprene pad, was non adjustable and is only a damper pad to prevent chain lash. It really should not be tight, and I would expect some running clearance.

But I can't say that there is only one type of tensioner, apart from the early rubber rings in grooves on the crankshaft pulley, which don't actually work.
