Yes, but what kind of material were the "ordinary" magnets actually made of? Most likely cheap junk, some arbitrary mix of refined steel scrap.

Not so long ago, as a practical joke, and to settle an argument about whether it was samaria cobalt or neodymium, I completely demagnetised a small neodymium magnet. Nothing much happened till it reached the Curie temperature.
