I have the car up on axle stands now. Put the gear selector in park and I can still turn the wheels. Does that sound like a cable problem.

Holding the other wheel still? The diff will allow them to turn in opposite directions even in park.

I have now done the oil and filter change - No Change
Followed some instructions to adjust the cable. The cable is in one piece as I can move the cable with the selector - No change
Still seems to engage for half a second and then disengage.
whilst on stands and in park, I can turn one wheel by hand and the other also turns in the opposite direction when turning either wheel.
If in any gear, I can turn the wheel by hand and the other doesn't move.
im going to have try tomorrow with the CV joints/driveshaft.
Any other suggestions. It's looking more like a garage job.

save time checking the drive shafts , put in park

push the car forward / backwards , car shouldn't move more than a few inches

or with one wheel jacked up , in park , the wheel shouldn't move , more than a few inches

if it suddenly gives , and any wheel moves without the pot joint moving (same side) - that is your problem

hate to say - I don't think it is the shaft / joints

As you say, in park with wheels on the floor, just a few inches roll either way.

sadly sounds internal - hoping I am wrong

I would still spend an hour playing around with it just ticking over , if something has stuck you may get it to release

fingers crossed for you

Hi all. No luck so far. I think I have exhausted all advice on here and on the automatic forum.

So i am now looking for someone in Essex that may be able to fix this. Couple of finger in the air prices are talking around £1700 to recondition the gearbox...Ouch
