Good info on ZDDP and VR1 oil. However, they claim that modern oils with the latest ratings are as good as oils with ZDDP from the wear standpoint. But still, they make VR1 with ZDDP for racing, so.....hmmm

I only used a fully synthetic oil in a Mini once. I was given some which the Shell rep. said would be ideal. So I out it in, got excellent oil pressure and then did a historic special stage rally.
It seemed fine during the event, but a few days later I noticed that in normal road driving it was 'crunching' when changing gear and the oil pressure was low.
The result was a need for a gearbox re-build with all new syncros, new main & big-end bearings, a crank grind and a set of cam bearings.
My friend, who was a a real 'old school' guy, said I had put 'weasel p**s' in rather than a proper oil and told me to only used Kendall 20w50 mineral in future, which I did whilst it was still easy to obtain, then switched to Valvoline when Kendall was no longer easily available.
Lesson learned at a cost of c.£600.

You guys are not filling me with confidence here!!!
Wasnt an easy decision to change but after the reading and watching I was convinced, Also spoke to a well known race engineer who maintains some of the quickest saloon cars in the country and its really his recommendation that swung me,
Were out pre season testing in the next month so I hope all goes well and Ill keep you posted,
One contributing factor was all the scaring on the fake oils and as the vr1 is so cheap compared it made me think a bit, but who knows I may have made a very bad mistake!!!!
