On my way to work this morning, my mini made a grinding noise, then died.
As I lifted the clutch in fourth the engine seemed to struggle, then it stalled. After pulling over, the engine started first time, the gear selector feels like it's engaging, but when I release the clutch it stalls again, as though the diff has seized.
Can anyone tell me if this sounds like the diff has gone?? And if so whats involved in sorting it.
Cheers,
FG.
Has my diff just died??

the usual indication is a big hole in the diff casing an oil everywhere... but if not..
But as you seem to be able to move the car then the diff's not locked, and is still turning.
What may be the problem is the main bearing in the gearbox has collapsed, this will cause the gearbox to lock, but will allow selection of gears...
Other options are the idler gear has blown, and has bits jammed into the primary gear (less likely)
But what ever the case, it's an engine out by the sounds of it...

When I was pushing the car (from the tow truck) it did lock up, but with a bit of rocking back and to, it released again....would this point to the bearing then?
