Hi

I noticed this before when I bought the mini, I was thinking before might be just the brake pads...

but today I drove the mini down the road to test and it sounds more like a squeeky rubber/tyre fouling something, but had a good look under and the wheels/tyres doesnt hit anything or anything close to it to make such a noise.

The noise is always there more evident when slowing down or rolling the car like on 15+kph

just wondering if you can tell from this pic if my pad is worn out from this pic...

Anyone had the same issue before? what can be worn out or something wrong with the mini?

a squeeky rubber/tyre fouling something

This is probably totally irrelevant but a failing water pump can make such a noise at the roadspeeds you describe. Have you definitely tracked the noise to the wheel?

waterpump should make noise even when idling
its defintely coming from the wheels
knuckle joint? drive shaft loose? can these parts make this type of noise/

Doesn't sound or look like worn pads...are all your gaiters intact? Could be split and hitting something, may produce more of a flapping noise though...?
Or bushes gone in suspension?

I've noticed when I removed the front wheels that the rotor outer edge has surface rust but not the face (sides)

the noise is in synch with the wheel revolving the noise goes faster when the wheels/car is moving faster

Get the car up on good axle stands, put chocks of wood at the front and back of the rear wheels, start the engine, select first gear and let it idle along, do not rev the engine as this will usettle the axle stands, if the noise is there you can try and source it while you are out the car. Take the wheels off and do the same process, if there is still a noise, you know it is not the wheels. Try and source where it is coming from.

The practice of doing this is not ideal, but I am a nutter and will try anything once until it goes wrong.

Disclaimer: I will not be held responsible for any damage caused due to unsafe procedures. You do all of the above at your own risk ;D

Other than that, TAKE IT TO A GARAGE :-

Put the car on axle stands, remove the roadwheels and just inspect everything carefully, all gaitors and bushes, rubbers, balljoints, etc.

What it could well be are the rubber cones shifting inside the subframe perhaps, this could create a squeaking much like a tyre would, knuckle joints could also create some strange sounds.

Someone posted this in ausmini forum

"It turned out to be rust on the discs (rotors). You say that there is rust on the edge but not on the faces. The centre of the disc will almost certailny have rust as well, where the flange joins the disc and on mine this had spread a little so that the inner edge of the pad rubbed on it when the wheel was rotating"

I'll take photos of the disc tomorrow and post it here

mines not really squeeky like when you have problems with belts
more like tyre rubbing noise but the wheels are not fouling anything
its clear
