Mpi Running Rough No Power Mystery!

Best Answer thelittlecarcompany , 13 January 2017 - 12:24 PM

Well after a lot of struggling it's finally off! It had very nearly destroyed the crank but after careful rebuild the mystery is solved it now runs perfect. Thanks for all your help guys :) Go to the full post

No it doesn't but I have made sure the inlet is exactly where it needs to be by marking it on the new gasket prior to fitting, Also there are no air leaks anywhere I have tested all round the throttle body manifold and pipes. Grr!

I had issues with my own MPi when the rings weren't fitted, it ran like a dog.

Worth a go.

I will do another test tomorrow to see if there is any air leaking from around the gasket but pretty sure it's sealed, thanks!

The MAP pressure will tell you if you've got an issue, mine was all over the place until I fitted the rings.

The more I read your description, the more I think its an air leak problem

The map is reading high which would suggest an air leak, but I can't find any leaks anywhere hmm!

Chuck some rings in then, also are you using the injection specific inlet gasket?

Ok I will try that tomorrow but I'm very sure there isn't an air leak going on. The gasket is a generic 1275 which I assume all use the same port diameter? I'm sure there is no leak there but I will try it just in case! Thanks again :)

I had a Rover 25 that would start OK, idle lumpy, no power, would backfire through the exhaust, generally a real dog to get moving, some days it was better than others. We changed coil packs, plugs, leads, crank sensor etc.........

It turned out to be the oxygen lambda sensor that was doing silly things. Fitted a new one and the car has been perfect ever since.

I'm not saying this is your problem, but it does sound similar and it has to be worth trying, even borrowing one to try.

Pete.

Found it!! The ring on the flywheel has slipped by about 15 degrees. Will pull it apart and reset it. Am I correct in thinking the 2 gaps should be tdc and bdc? Thanks for your advice guys soo appreciated!!!!

Replace it mate. Usually a result of over heating the clutch and flywheel assy.
Second hand flywheel and new clutch.

Glad to be of help

That's a good result. Fingers crossed it runs better once you've repaired it

After many hours of struggling the flywheel remains very much still on the crank! The locating washer was cracked into 4 bits so I am guessing it has welded itself on. Oh joys! Much heat, tension and bashing tomorrow and hopefully it will come free. I will keep you posted thanks!

Any tricks apart from the usual heat pressure and bashing?
