My MK 1 van had a cork seal and it was a real pig to fit compared to the red rubber variety. I would not recommend it. But, for a very original vehicle, such things may matter.

So, any final word on the hard seal MiniGilly?  It looks like I will need to do this repair in the near future. I originally thought it was the lower pulley seal, with all that oil all over the place, but I just finished replacing that (and the new bits that were also done while apart) and it's still leaking. Easy to spot now that it's all clean.

So I's like to hear anyone's experience with the CAM6548 hard half-moon seal, especially before I pull the whole thing apart again.

I used the rigid half moon seal when I built my engine, doesn't seem to be leaking... Bit of RTV on each end (and maybe a smear along its length but I can't remember) sees it home.

I didn't do this in situ though, was built like it..

I went with the 'soft' seal that came with the Minispares gasket set. Didn't trim it, although it did look a bit long, and it compressed nicely into place when the gearbox was dropped on, fitted the end plate onto the block first to make sure the seal didn't squish out. All good so far and not a drop of oil anywhere :D

All this doesn't help with you question though sorry.

I went with the AHU1959 soft seal. I know this doesn't answer your question directly but its now been in over a year with no leaks. I assembled it with the front plate fitted and didn't trim it but did put the lightest of smears of Loctite SI 5660 http://www.loctite.c...d=8802653274113 along the length of it as well as on the ends. I know this isn't exactly what you asked but its an alternate option (hopefully not to confuse you :shy: ).

I don't want to pull the engine and it seems like an easy fix. If it has worked for some, then I'll order it and the relevant gaskets and give it a shot. Fingers crossed.

Worth a shot and would be good if you kept us up to date with how it performs.

Only issue I may see is that the seal being too long may mean some people cut it down excessively, therefore meaning there if no compression on the seal itself. My half moon seal (rigid) was left as original length and it seems to have worked fine. Only about 1/8" - 1/16" was "excess" though..

Either way, good luck I hope the repair works out well. I reckon the rigid half moon seal would work out quite well for an in situ repair.
