Hi guys,
Im not too clued up about straight cut gear boxes and I was hoping for some advice, or some direction to go in.
I basically really love the sound of the whiney straight cut gears those race minis have, and I'd like my project to have the same noise. What would be the cheapest way of getting that sound?
Saw something about straight cut drop gears are a bit cheaper? I could be talking rubbish but someone might be able to clue me up.
I'd be looking for a kit to modify my current 1275 gear box.
Cheers guys

You get a sc box for the purpose rather than the sound to be honest. sc boxes use a helical 4th gear so are just about acceptable.

I've got a sc box, I love it, the gf on the other hand...

Put sc drops in cheaper and easier than doing a full gearbox plus it's the drops that give you that whine

Any of you guys know where I could buy an inexpensive kit to do it myself?
Our club did Wirral 2 Llandudno today and some of the minis with those gearboxes sounded amazing!
And would I need anything else for it to work? Or can I just put the kit straight into the standard box and it'll work fine

If you intend using SC gears and/or SC drop gears, you will be advised to wear ear plugs when driving. I have SC gears and drops in my rally 'S' and for road driving they are simply horrible. For a competition car where helmets are worn it is not such an issue, but on the road ear plugs are really needed.

SC gears and drops are intended for competition so that with the SC gears an engine with a very narrow power band can be kept 'on the cam', whilst SC drops are to enable the overall gearing to be slightly altered for different circuits without having to lift the engine out and change the complete diff unit.

Far from ideal and really unnecessary on a road Mini.

The cheapest and easiest way of getting the noise is to record it on CD or stick and then play it through the radio. Then when you get fed up after 2 minutes, you can turn it off and return to sanity.

Most mini shops will have them. You'd be better off appreciating the sound of other peoples cars from the comfort of your own car

Dont do it untill you've driven a straight cut mini before.
It's the most irritating sound ever, I loved it too when I first got into mini's, it reminded me of my dad's racing days. But after driving our own race mini a few times I quickly grew tired  of the sound, even with a crash helmet on!

You really need to want it badly before installing it. It sounds great for the first few miles but SC drops and or SC gearboxes become very irritating in a road car if you're going to do any sort of mileage. The simple fact you can hear it from outside must give you some of a clue as to what the noise must be like inside. Well imagine that noise and then quadruple it.
