Does this have 4, 6 & 8 on the back of it? If so, make sure it is on 4 as it is a 4 cylinder car. Is this the manufacturing wiring suggestion?

What happens when you actually start the engine?

I've had exactly the same problem with a tim rev gauge. It's wired in properly and I've tested the wires all the way back to the circuit board inside the gauge, so for me its a fault with one of the components on the board. The reason it jazzes all the way round to max is that whatever controls the strength of the electromagnet doesn't work, so just applies max voltage all the time. I don't know if thats of any use to you as you might havea problem with your wiring, I don't know. But I would get a multimeter and check you have voltage at the circuit board inside the gauge to make sure the wires are ok.

mmmm interesting, when u start it the pointer goes back to 0 while the started is ticking and then its off again back round to 8000rpm when the starter stops and the engine roars into life!

Is the green going to the right place? Usually it is B/W coming from the coil is it not? So why green, hhmmm?????????

I should add that mine was working when it was fitted by the original owner (though I never saw it), further evidence that mine is a circuit board problem. I've given up on it to be honest, will be getting a new one when i can be bothered to go on ebay.

NOT SUITABLE FOR COIL PACK TYPE IGNITION SYSTEMS

Thats a Coil Pack, not a coil!!!
a coil pack is what im using for the Distributorless ignition system.

They are made for standard coil systems.

@Ed4RAN: Do the very last minis (2000MY) use coil pack ignition (wasted spark)? Just out of interest.

In respect of the counter which immediately goes to 8K - I'm 99% sure the gauge is in fact faulty. There's actually quite a bit of electronics inside between the green pulse wire and the pointer!

Chris.
