Hello again,
I need a new front pulley

MED do a 'S' damper kit.

Any thoughts, entertaining the idea cause Minispares are out of stock on a standard pulley.

Let me know what you think.
Comes balanced and ready to go.

Great on mine, though clearance between it and the engine mount is so so so tight, so fanbelt fitting is a right faff.

Why waste money on aftermarket frippery, which, not having the development program of the original, may well not have the correct damping chracteristics and may result in a broken crankshaft?

Minispares is not the only supplier of standard parts. Try Somerford or Bull Motif for a start.

I do agree with the above, there have been various type of crank pulley / damper over the years all to suit different engines. I got a good second hand stock one off ebay when mine needed replacement.

Well it did have the development program of the original... It's the same as the S Damper,

Or go for the ultimate in Crankshaft Dampers for the A Series, a viscous type which KAD sell.

http://www.kentautod...er-front-pulley

With it being a viscous type it will "able to tune itself to any instance of torsional vibration which may develop".  If you tune your car and change the rotating mass then the major harmonic frequency at which the engine will generate will change and thus the elastomer (rubber) damper, which is tuned to damp a specific frequency band may not be appropriate for your engine.  Elastomer dampers only work at a narrow frequency band whereas viscous dampers will damp all instances of engine harmonics at all rpm's.

The downside.... it's £252!

and very heavy. fine for a circuit car but not so good for a car that has rapidly changing revs.

I've put one on mine, and I have no issue with rapidly changing revs.

Everyone seems to be out of stock, except minisport, who I won't use.
Also, if their pulleys broke crankshafts, nobody would buy them and when I typed pulley into Google, it would have resulted in streams of angry reviews and pictures of broken cranks, but it didn't. I'm pickin they wouldn't be selling them.....but they are.

Yes, I did notice it was looking like space could be an issue. To be honest, that is the main reason I didn't buy it last night, opting instead to ask the all mighty Forum for its collective knowledge.

I'm pretty sure the Mini Spares ones were recalled as they came apart. The 'rubber' used in them was not rubber at all, but appeared to be a Polyurethane. I had my serious doubts from the outset if it was at all suitable, even overlooking this issue.

Rhemac do really good ones.

Another very good option is to have an original one re-built. There's a lot of reputable firms about who do this.

Have you used a Rhemac one? Just looked them up, they don't seem to have a working website as yet.
Any idea of a cost?

I have used a few and very good. I'll add though, that I haven't used or tried those from MED or KAD, but speculation aside, I am reliably informed that these too are good.

I can't reliably recall what I paid for the last Rhemac one, but rather than looking for a cheap damper, look for something that's going to save you crank. Anything you save on a cheap damper can quickly be lost if it doesn't do it's job!

Rhemac don't retail, but will put you in touch with a reseller.

I've used a lot of the MED pullys on my engines. No problems.
Have found they do need polishing out as they're very tight on the crank. Should never hammer one on and need to prybar it off!
Modify bottom mount for fanbelt removal
