Had squeaking/squealing from the right side of the mini. Tracked it to the wheel.

Now I jacked up the mini and checked for play (m.o.t style). The right wheel is definitely catching on something. I put the mini on axle stands and put the mini in 1st gear and let it idle along... Left wheel rotated as expected. The right wheel didnt even rotate all the way around it stopped and turned, stopped and turned. Am I right to suspect something to do with the brakes? If its the bearing is there a way to find out apart from taking off the whole wheel and hub?

Im guessing i can use CharileBrown's FAQ:

Disc Brake Change

From taking off the hub what do i do next?

did you jack up both sides of your car? because the differential would turn the easiest wheel which would be the other side...if 1 wheel is off the ground and 1 is in contact the 1 in the air will rotate as it is the easiest wheel to town and the easiest way for the differential to transfer the motion

its very erregular for both wheels to rotate while in the air at the same time

I had the right on the jack and the other on an axle stand... Both were off the gorund... Any way to test both wheels at the same time?

i dont think there is unles you can get to a roling road but would wouldnt be able to look in and inspect due to safety etc...rather than running the engine and the wheels grab the wheel and rotate it by hand the wheel on the other side will rotate in the other direction...try keep turning the wheel in the suspected side by hand looking along the drive shaft i would check for damaged gators and sealing rings right upto the output from the gearbox

Ok... well today I had a little spare time to take off the wheel and inspect the squeaking noise in 'daylight'. Ive come to the conclusion that its something to do with the brake pad or brake disc. Pictures are as follows...

Pic of disc and caliper. At first glance both were ok. I then had a little closer look.

Closer inspection showed a bit of rust on one part of the disc. Close to the hub. It was only on one side. I thought might be the reason while running the car at first you hear nothing. Then as the disc heats up the squeaking starts.

Close up of the pads. Are they ok still? If not what pads will I need?

IS the squeak origin? :-

I doubt it, thats just the area of the disc where isn't in contact with the pad.

I believe squeeks are usually bearing or bush related.

If its a really faint, it could just be pads rubbing on the disk, its common.

Clean the pads and caliper up, thin smear of copper slip on back of pads.

See if this helps.

The thing is when i rotate the hub the pad rubs against the rusty part slowing the hub down. I think.

How do i clean the rust off? Emery cloth? Petrol? And whats copper slip exactly?

If the pad rubbed against the rusty part, i don't think it would be rusty, rather like the rest of your disk where the pads definately do rub.

As for copper slip, think its copper grease.

have u changed the pads on the disks? when u change the pads your spost to put a layer of copper slip/grease on the back( side not in contact with disk) cant remember why it stops squaking but i think its to do with vibrations
does the squeking occur when the brakes are pressed? or is it a constant noise?

I havent changed the pads. The squeaking doesnt appear at first. A bit of driving around then it starts. Then continues! Like every rotataion of the wheel i hear a squeak. Faster i go the faster it gets. :'(

It could be a slightly warped disk then...?
