there was another 1:1 top 5 speed back in the dim and distant, the collotti, bit to be honest its probably best forgotton!

Yes, I do recall those. A friend of my brother's had one back in the 70's. It was OK if I recall, he was using it in his daily driver and pushed it all the time. I think he did eventually break it (as he did with standard gearboxes in any case) and then went looking for parts. I think he sold it on before repairing it.
None the less, the tallest FD available at that time was 3.44:1 so the advantage he was looking for just wasn't there for a road car.
<Edit: (having a bad memory day - or perhaps I should say, slow) I'm also pretty sure KG Engineering also did 5 and maybe 6 speed gearboxes with top gears of 1:1.
There's been many more than just those from KAD, though I think KAD are about the only ones who still have them currently available. >
