I want to try to improve the gear shift feel. The gear shift is a bit vague, mushy and inaccurate. I know that the mini won't exactly have crisp shifts of modern car but I want to get the best out of it that I can. What parts do you recommend buying and what steps do you recommend taking in order to improve things?

Number 9. Get familiar with these catalogues, they'll save you a lot of time and effort.

I'm familiar with the schematics and part selectors, I just need to know what parts in particular are good to refresh. Where does that part go?

Replace the shifter bobbins as a start!

Otherwise known as cotton reel rubber mounts.

So I'll order a pair of the rubber mounts, the nylon cup underneath the gear lever, the sleeved pin thing. Anything else I can look at/change? I want the best shifter feel I can have whilst sticking with the stock parts. Best to me is crisp, confident shifts with no vagueness in where the gear engages.

I don't see it mentioned, you'll want to replace this as well http://www.minispare...Cases.aspx|Back to shop

Ok now showing.

Thought you said you were aware of the parts and the layouts.

Your first part is not for your gear linkage.

No, but it's just a cheap part that I might as well replace while I am there.

EDIT: Sorry now I get what you mean by *your* gear linkage. Must've picked up the wrong thing. And I meant that I am familiar with that they exist not an expert on minis by any means!

The two bush you list. Both rarely need replacing.

The one on the gearbox will not be fun to do in car. The exhaust down pipe (exhaust) will need removing to give clearance to press to bush out and press the new one in.

But you don't have in on your linkage. It is only on the early ones.
