That looks like a bit more than what I want. Essentially you're modifying the entire way that the shifter is mounted?

 

Would you suggest removing the gear linkage entirely to make the changes I an wanting to do or just removing it for inspection and rebuilding?

It's the gearbox itself that provides the 'H' gate, the gearstick is just a lever that moves the link rod via a ball and socket.

Have a look from underneath for free play while someone moves the stick for you. You can also remove the bottom cover plate to see stick in the ball socket. A set of mole grips are handy for holding bits to isolate free play to individual parts.
