Hi i got a metro 1275 A+ engine and the dipstick is loose on the hole just rests on the hole theres no positive seal when putting it back in this is the type that goes straight in to the box no tube! Is this normal to be like this worried that it will pop out and dump the oil thanks in advance

Hi dude
Over the years of hot and cold the rubber on the dipstick goes hard and shrinks youll have to purchase a new one im afraid.
Give minispares a call they may have a suitable new one.
I believe the a+ are all the same length so could get a nice new shiny one.
Mini sport do a nice range of anodised ones.
Mine is straight into the block no tube either.
Regards
Kev

I fitted a new 'O' ring to mine. That stopped it rattling and jumping up and down.

I have seen some people attach springs to the dipstick handle / hoop part at the top to anchor it down.

i gather just a standard O ring is fine or is it a special type or size?

I have a box of assorted ones from Aldi and just picked one that was a snug fit.

See below for info on the dipsticks. Note that the earliest type of seal is still available, a later one is not!

I would agree with whistler. A box of assorted O rings is something that every classic car owner should have. They are used on many other things about the house too. The expensive spring device has a lot of "pose factor", but only when the bonnet is open. and doesn't by itself provide a seal.

I'm aware this is an old thread but since I couldn't find an answer anywhere else, having experimented the best size of O ring is 6mm ID x 2mm. You can grab them for £1 on eBay.

Just to add on the thread revival, added a stainless ebay spring and stainless cabletie round the dizzy clamp on mine for under a fiver. Works a treat and abit more satisfying spending more on a spring kit.

I've got loose dipstick syndrome  :proud:  where does the o-ring fit because there doesn't appear to be a groove or anything ?

Mine didn't have any groove, so I just made one using a ball shaped cutter on my dremel grinder. Didn't take much effort to mill a shallow groove. Slapped on the o-ring and it all fits nice and snug now.
