Yes as Cobra says, I got my wife to wiggle mine (steady now!) while I looked underneath, within ten seconds I could see the rack moving side to side before the wheels turned, a quick nip up of the bolts and it was as good as new, the symptoms were identical to yours.

Please everyone, remember that the pinch bolt for the column to rack joint is required to be checked for tightness at every routine service. That is because it is a real killer if ignored. It only takes 30 seconds with two spanners.

 

Also, if you have it apart, the rack and column must be aligned correctly as described in the manual. People have been killed after fitting steering column drop brackets without realigning the rack. Drop brackets which are not sufficiently stiff laterally or where the adjustment can slip (MOST!) are manifestly unsafe for much the same reasons.

 

The rack U bolt locknuts becoming loose by themselves is not all that common, They are supposed to be Nyloks.
