Hi, just been for MOT and they cant locate my VIN plate on my 1990 City E. I bought the car some years ago aa a total rebuild and never noticed it wasnt there along with several MOT testers.

I think it should have the squarish Austin Rover plate as per the attached picture, i need help with the location of the plate and if possible the paint and trim codes.

The Mini is painted Old english White with a Cream interior.

Also what should be in the 1 and 2 boxes (Kg weights).

I know its a lot to ask but i`m sure someone out there must know.

Kind regards,  Ian

The vin plate should go underneath the wiring loom at the front of the inner wing (LH as viewed from front of car)

See here for more::

And it's upside down so you can read it.

From my 1990 Mayfair-

The weight sections are left blank, I believe they're only stamped on commercial vehicles/ car-derived vans.

The top row has a 6 number/ letter code which I think is an internal factory reference and not a lot of significance to us.

The 2nd row is your VIN, which is embossed rather than stamped (ie, it is punched by a machine from the rear, with a corresponding die at the front).

If your car is an original colour, I'd find out the 3-letter code and have that stamped in the PAINT box, ie PMA for black.  You can do the same for the trim but this code will be harder to find, you may have to compare the plate from a similar car.

There are a few online companies that will correctly emboss/ stamp your VIN plate nowadays and that is what I'd do in your position.  You'll need to show them the V5C so it's all legit but the plate will look absolutely correct and won't attract attention.

here is the location and plate from my 1991 mini city (not city E as rover dropped the E tag in august 1998, regardless of what the V5 says)

the paint will be wrong but the trim should be right. all the other boxes seem to be blank apart from the chassis no.

The Mini is painted Old english White with a Cream interior.

Both of witch aren't standard for an 80's city. The paint if it was originally white, would have been diamond white with a grey interior.

It could be Arum White, which was cream but I think that had been discontinued by 1991?

I'd not personally worry too much about the paint & trim codes, you can even leave them blank.
