Hello

I'm rebuilding my car and it has front drums,i never thought to mark them when i dismantled them and now i have 2 front hubs sat on the bench and have no idea which is which..they look identical to me but a quick look on ebay shows people sell them as sided I.E N/S or O/S so how do i work out which is which.

I know the back plates are different as i have had to replace them and they have different numbers ..they arent currently fitted to the hubs.

The grease nipple holes point one way.

Can't remember off the top of my head if it is forward or backwards.

I think forwards. Look in your Haynes manual.

Yes, it is forwards. And, the steering arms point backwards if they have not been removed. There usually is no need to remove them.

Maybe he is talking about the flanges? Fits both sides

The CVs though are RHS and LHS.

The Top Ball Joint Nipple is forward facing and the Lower, rear facing.

The cv joins are not sided.

Well actually, they are - once you take them from the box and fit it to say the RH side, then it's the RH one ;D  :P

Yes, and from the point of view of wear it should always remain on the side where it was first used once it has done more than a few miles, even if all the parts around it are changed. Same with the drive shafts, although they are unequal and would not be considered swappable, unless you were using one of the things that spaces the pot joint out to use two short (equal) shafts.

In the case of the shafts, reversal would nearly double the peak to peak torque that the shaft would see in its life and, unless it was over-engineered, probably take it above the fatigue threshold. The effects of wear in the CV are more subtle but nonetheless real.

I would suggest that hub flanges probably can be interchanged freely, as the drive torque is actually taken by the clamping load on the cone, not the spline, but why would you want to swap them anyway?

Just thought I should throw that in lest someone inexperienced does swap his bits about, with disappointing results. I knew of someone who did that with the torsion bar suspension on a Moggy
thinking that he would undo years of settling. Well it did, for all of 10 minutes, till a double loud bang was followed by the sound of one of Issigonis earlier creations scraping along the ground, as both bars fractured in quick succession.

That's weird, I swear my nips are both facing forward.

All of mine were too. Maybe they do things differently in Australia? I know that certain parts such as early radius arms were different, and better.

Absolutely correct MokeSpider. Top BJ grease nipple forwards facing, Lower BJ grease nipple rearwards facing. Steering arm 2 bolt holes on the top of the hub to get the correct orientation for LH and RH.

I have about eight examples in my possession and every one has the nipples in the front both top and bottom. These are all Mk IV and older Canadian imports.
