Evening all, I cleaned and recharged my Kand N filter the other week now on acceleration it gets flat spots where the pedal is flat but the car feels as if it's holding back and gets noises and throaty with shudders. This happens if the car is cold or hot, I've found sometimes that if I get it hot then push through the flat spot it runs fine from then onwards. Also had a pop from the exhaust today, hmmm.

Seems to me my engine is running lean, ( I can stop it all by using just enough choke to start to engage ). Could this be due to the previous owner setting the carb Air to fuel ratio with a blocked or partially blocked filter ? Also though of taking the spark plugs out to make sure I hadn't coated them with the air filter charging oil I did use a little too much ( smoke from the exhaust) but that's all cleared up now.

Anyone got someideas ?

Sounds like the carb needle or you've disturbed something on the carb.

Why pull the carb apart 1st? if it was running fine before it's more likely something to do with the filter clean? did you put the base plate on the right way up? there a couple of vent holes on the flange that may have got blocked if it's not the correct way around or the gasket upside down? also you said 3/4 travel on the piston? is this pushing up on it? it may be fouling on the damper not allowing full travel? Try adjusting the mixture a tad richer and see if this helps, I cant see that someone would adjust the carb with a filter so dirty it would make that much difference! and anyway the mixture adjustment is an idle adjustment it has very little effect off idle some but not a lot.

Edit. and try adjusting those tappets!!

Pull the carb apart first ? I cleaned the air filter that's hardly pulling it apart ... never took the base plate of purely the chrome pancake filter top and the filter element. The damper has about 3/4" travel not the piston.

Edit : also this is my first mini only had it around a month there is no need to be snarky. Everyone starts out somewhere.

Take the air filter off and try it without. That will identify whether the problem is down to the filter.

Just went for a drive once it got to temperature it seemed impossible to get to do the symptom is said.

Edit : that was with the filter, currently out will try filterless later

If you over-oiled the filter it could prevent the full flow of air. Run it without the filter and see how it goes.

Try this, also check to see if there is oil in the dashpot(unscrew the black plastic cap and pull the damper out) fill the centre where the damper slides with engine oil.

The engine also sounds a little tappy, reset the tappets to 12 thou cold(Haynes manual gives the procedure)

now the engine is up to temp i can't get it to hold back but I'll try no filter on a cold engine

Now the engine is warm it's ALOT better I'll post a video tomorrow showing it warm yea the dash pot has oil, when I lift the black cap it has around 3/4" worth of travel in the oil

Sorry I wasn't being "Snarky" just trying to help! as above you said you would be taking the carb apart? That''s what I was referring too.

but I still don't get the 3/4 travel part on the damper?
