Sounds like the carb needle or you've disturbed something on the carb.

Ill take the carb apart tomorrow and have a look at the needle and jet nozzle
 
Sorry I wasn't being "Snarky" just trying to help! as above you said you would be taking the carb apart? That''s what I was referring too.
but I still don't get the 3/4 travel part on the damper?

If I unscrew the black plastic and lift it out the oil, when I put it back in it sits about 3/4" above the thread. Just saying how much oil is in there. Also been driving around with the engine at temperature and haven't had it stutter once ... I think it may just be a cold engine or warm engine problem

I think your right. I bet it's been a while since you drove an old car with a manual choke? It just takes a short learning curve as to when to feed the choke back in. Sorry about the misunderstanding. I'm old and people say I'm too blunt......................

ahaha I'm afraid it's my first old car in fact it's older than me ... the mini is 1986 I'm 1996 ! When I first got it seemed the choke could be eased in faster but I guess weather was hotter but thank you for your help
