If you’re painting it yourself and can do it in stages......

Paint the underneath, in the engine bay and then install the brake/fuel lines, battery cable and subframes.
Then paint inside & in boot.

Then build it

Then paint outside and bolt on panels.

Yeah I agree you need a plan first, but it does really sound like getting there and I think once in paint the first thing would be to get it rolling. Keep the pics coming

well the underside is in white gravitex now, so that is almost done. The engine bay is in primer, and so is the boot. I was thinking of painting the boot today but it was a warm day, Phill next door was sat outsdide drinking beer and reading a book. My compressor is in the shed not far from where he was sitting so i left it lol. I did strip the boot lid of paint and try it for fit.

I think ill order some cones now and some knuckle joints, remove the subframes, build them up properly, and paint the engine bay and boot after finishing the door. Then put them back on and they can stay on then.

Didnt get a run or anything, it looks really good. I thought id get it painted today that way it goes really hard before i put the shocks on etc. Hopefully tomorrow ill paint the engine bay but not 100% sure yet.

I put the order in with mini sport too, 4 standard cones, 4 knuckle joints, and a black subframe/suspension bush set.

Good progress!

I have just seen, it seems you have the bracket for the old smaller tank, is that right?

today the mini sport package came! So i started on the front subframe, new cones, new knuckle joints, and some black paint. Then new top mounts fitted with the subframe to the car

IMG_20200513_150627334.jpg

I did sumular to the rear with new mount bushes too

IMG_20200513_165208079.jpg

Seems a bit weird having the right wheels on it now

IMG_20200513_173157079.jpg

Plan is to get it rolling again, then i can push it outside and get around the car to finish the body work. I think the first job will be though to push the car on its side and just tidy up a  few bits. I did think about doing the brake lines etc but will have to see. want it painted asap now, i am back in work in 2 weeks from today .

If the brake and fuel lines are going in their original places, they'd be better done without the subframes in, especially the back one.

Yes never put any thought into that! I may make all new copper lines, and for the fuel, you can use some copper with plastic coating, i use it on the rally car think its for gas, its really good. So may push it on its side and make all new.

Today, car is rolling again!

It feels a bit strange to see it on all 4 wheels.

Problem now is, its the final body work, im not sure what to do, i havnt learnt this part just yet. Need advice.

Ah yes, final bodywork, the bit everyone sees sand judges the quality of your car on.I have resprayed many cars and not turned out a good job yet.I am presently blocking down the primer on my Mini.My advice is use quality materials lots of patience and a light touch when sanding. There are lots of books on bodywork but I think you need "the touch", you may have it.Did I say you need patience?.Good luck and enjoy it.Steve..

i phoned my mate AllisterW today, he has over the years turned out some really impressive stage rally cars, from novas to the last car was a proper prodrive subaru he fully ran and repainted. So basically the pan is, stop worrying about it, get on with it. I put some black spray all over the car, and then sanded it all down. I didnt realise how many runs in the primer i had already put in the car there where until i had the black spray on it. Then, i decided to prime the roof first as i hadnt the brown paper or masking tape yet, and if i get it tomorrow , i can be priming the rest of the car on sunday maybe.

so some pics

with the garage being so narrow, its a struggle to get around the car to do the roof, but if i put the front over to one side, i can lift the rear over by hand to give more room lol

Not far off paint now!
