In terms of length, depends on your rev range, and where peak power is, helmholtz calculation...

And the diameter of the pipe.

Side exit is a must in an estate I find. the flat back sucks all the fumes forward otherwise.

Just out of interest, do people running centre exits find that they pull the fumes in as said? My friends stunk but I put that down to a exhaust leak

yes and diameter,

practically the difference in lenth is not worth worying about, more of an issue would be the quality of the bends before and after the silencer, ideally they should be mandrel bent to keep the bore the same all the way through.

this is somthing I've put together for my K headed turbo, 2.25" up to the silencer, the holled silencer tube is the next size up so fits over the 2.25", and then the tail pipe is the next size up again and fits over the holled ip taking it to 2.5".

The centre exhaust was originally designed for rally cars because when the silencer box on the side exhausts hit the ground on rough roads it put a bending load on the pipe which could then break off or fracture. The silencer box on the centre exit system has a skid welded to the front to reduce impact damage.
Just a bit of history for you.
