I've just bought a ported head which has the bypass blocked off. My engine setup currently uses the bypass hose

I'm inclined to get rid of the bypass hose as I have a sandwich plate kicking about.

Just a quick question, where would the hose from the sandwich plate go to?

Cheers,

Dan

The bypass hose and the sandwich plate are not related. The bypass hose is connected to the waterpump. All you need do is change the waterpump for one without a bypass hose https://www.minispar...Pumps.aspx|Back to shop

Cheers for the reply.

I've just spent a bit of time searching through the forum for opinions on removing the bypass hose. And the sandwich plate was mentioned as a possible alternative to drilling the thermostat when removing the bypass hose.

I thought the sandwich plate was fitted to later cars (metros/spi's/turbos) that didn't have the bypass hose fitting in the casting?

Its easy to drill the thermostat and just change the waterpump.

sandwich plate as stated has nothing to do with the bypass hose as stated above. what it does do is give a take of point to the heater hose. heads without the take off on the far end of it tend to have the sandwhich plate.

Cheers for the replies gents, the bypass hose debate seems to be a bit of a controversial issue haha.

The reason I asked about the sandwich plate was this article.

"Later Mini's lost the little hose between the head and water pump, just like many Metros. However, they still have a bypass feature. In these cases, they have a 'sandwich' plate under the thermostat housing. There is a water outlet on this that allows water to flow out when the thermostat, above it, is shut. It is then fed back into the bottom hose and then into the pump. So, still a bypass, but via a slightly longer route. When fitting an engine without the little bypass hose, it is recommended to use this method."

There is nothing controversial about it. Do whatever you want. The majority just drill holes in the thermostat https://www.minispar...ssic/thermostat  and they don't have to fit a sandwich plate and the associated hoses. I've built quite a few A series engines and when I've removed the bypass that's all I've done. My current engine develops 108bhp at the wheels and 83 lbs of torque and revs well north of 7,000 and all it has is the holes drilled in the thermostat. As I have said, the choice is entirely yours.

Holes in the thermostat sounds likes the easiest option. Cheers for the replies.

As above the sandwich plate is a red herring. You don't need to change the water pump you can always use the blanking plug sold by Mini Spares to prevent the bypass hose on the water pump pushing water out of it. (you obviously need a jubilee clip on it. http://www.minispare...spx?1~5~45|Back to catalogue
I would personally put a new pump on whilst the head is off

Does running a hose from the sandwich plate to the bottom radiator hose not give the same effect as drilling the holes?

For what it's worth, in all my Minis and Mokes over the last 30 odd years, I've never had a By-pass Hose and Never drilled the Thermostat (which to some degree over-rides it's purpose). No issues other than the cooling system takes a little longer to fill.

Yes and they are made that way.
