I too use Permatex on just about all gaskets and RTV on the Thermostat, Water Pump & Heater Take Off.
I don't use any on the Rocker Cover.

Excellent stuff, yet the thermostat gaskets still leak so they need RTV lol

Sorry mate. No. 3.
Permatex was bought out a few years back by Loctite, it's sold in some parts under that name too.

Wellseal and permatex #3 are both aviation sealants not that means that there better just they are good enough for airplane engine work there good enough for me! Wellseal was originally formulated by Rolls-Royce and is excellent stuff and it smells really good too. I never use RTV unless the mating surfaces are really bad and can't be refaced for some reason. I've seen a lot of engines over the years assembled/awash in RTV and it gets everywhere you don't want it! I worked on a vintage McLaren with an external screen filter fitted and it was plugged so badly that it starved the bearings at full chat and destroyed a motor............Hateful stuff.........

Hylomar was also developed by Rolls-Royce as it proudly says on the tube ( or made under licence from R-R)

RTV, like any sealant, should be used in moderation!
RTV is THE 'Gasket' for 99% of the late model Mini Gearbox Diff Caps - they are fitted up with RTV and no paper or anything else;-

In defence of RTV its not the sealant that's the problem it the lack of understanding of how to apply it. I use RTV but use it very, very sparingly and have never had a problem with excess getting into oilways etc. I know there are plenty of "mechanics" out there who plaster it on thinking more is better, they deserve all they get. Its all down to what you've been taught and how you apply that (no pun intended).
