Just getting to the crunch time on my engine rebuild.
Its about to be sat on the gearbox and then dropped into the car!
However I was wondering what sort of figures I should be expecting from this build!!
Once it has been run in I will be heading to the Rolling road to have it checked! But obviously I will need to have an idea if what is disappointing or exceedingly good!!
So here's the specs:
1098 Block, Crank (Reground) & Pistons
295 Head, .60 thou skim, unleaded seats
MG Metro NA Camshaft
Maniflow alloy inlet
Maniflow Cooper Free flow exhaust manifold
Maniflow center exit exhaust
Hif38 or Reece-Fish 1"1/2 Carb
What figures would be Good? Bad? Disaster?

Hi,
The MG1100 (AD016) in standard form managed 55bhp and 61lbf/ft of torque running on twin 11/4" SU carbs from memory, so I'd expect something similar from your spec once correctly set-up!
The 1098cc A series doesnt like sustained excessive engine speeds but the long stroke crankshaft in these engines makes for a nice torquey engine capable of good performance!
Cheers, Steve.

100% spot on with the 70Hp numbers .. I had a 1098 on a 1st rebore, 12G295 and a midrange Kent profile (266 I think?) ..head was just cleaned up a bit and lead free exhaust seat inserts. It made 72Hp on Red Lines rolling road over in Iver ..ran a 1.5" SU, a cheap LCB, standard steel inlet with the exhaust part hacked off.
I loved it, pulled well and still made decent revs too.

Keep the revs below 5.5k and it last too.

1098 based engines make great road units. All torque for a little engine.
Keep the revs below 5.5k and it last too.

Thanks I look forward to having it on the road finally!
I am also curious to know what they would be like on the drag strip, with Santa Pod having just passed....
I would imagine the high torque figures would be good, but the inability to rev freely would be a problem...

I built a 1098 engine for a historic rally Austin-Healey Sprite Mk.1. It was a 1098 engine bored to +0.060". Head was a well-flowed 295 with a CR of 10.2:1.
Cam was a Kent 266 with 1.5:1 roller tip rockers,
Carbs were twin H4's on an opened out manifold, flywheel was a lightweight steel one and it had an Aldon distributor customised for this engine.
With a nice exhaust manifold and a quiet exhaust it gave 72 bhp at 5800 rpm. With a CR gearbox and a 'Post-Office van' final drive ratio its acceleration was stunning. remember, that car is around 100 kg lighter than a Mk.1 Mini-Cooper in rally trim.
