It may have been, though it would have had to have been one of the first off the line.

G plate = Aug 1968 - July 1969        .... & The Mk3 came out in Oct 1969!

Possibly re-shelled into a Mk3 shell after a rally accident. Not unusual back then.

He's saying the opposite way, mk3 into a mk2.

Or is he saying it was a Cooper S but in a mk3 body?

Not the Mk 3 S, that didn't appear until April 1970.

I knew many Mk2 Cooper S owners who reshelled their cars into Mk3 shells in the 1970's due to rust or accident damage, no one cared about originalty back then and many considered it to be updating the car without doing major restoration work on an old shell which was not financially viable then......eg. I had a Mk1 Mini at the time could not wait to get a Mk3 Mini with proper wind up windows!

Several of the last Mk2 Coopers also left the factory in Mk3 monotone colours and with a mix of parts like the Mk3 bootlid as seen here:-

But we need to know what Hubba meant, a mk3 Cooper S in it's correct body type but on a G reg or a mk2 Cooper S in a mk3 body, how does he know it was a Cooper S at all rather than a mk3 onwards with stuff bolted to it and a pair of badges? More info please Mr Hubba :)

Or a personal reg no? You can put an older number on a newer car, but not vice versa

It would seem that it is either a personal plate from 1968 - '69 on a 1970 or later car, or a Mk.2 'S' which was re-shelled into a Mk.3 shell due to an accident or rust. Probably the latter as it is/was a rally car and such action was quite normal back then. If you had a crash on a rally all you wanted was to get the car re-built so that you could get back rallying.

We never, ever thought that 50 years later anyone would be remotely interested in our old cars. I for one had no interest back then in cars which were being used for competition in 1920.

Nope. Asked the owner and he said it was a mk3 cooper s. I did ask "on a G Greg?" But didn't get much response. Looked like the right shell. Internal door hinges, rectangular rear lights etc. But I did notice it had the weather strips on the roof seam but the drainage slots were cut outs like a new type shell as opposed to the horizontal slits you get on an old shell.

Probably nothing much I particular in a heritage shell or more likely just a later reshell, at a push the vin plate off something old.

Mk.3 Cooper 'S'
'G' registration suffix
An original and genuine car.

You could have any two of the above but not all three.
