Hi Guys,

 

Quick question, is it alright to use Castrol Magnetec oil with a Series A engine?

 

I figure that perhaps the magnetic particles might help to pull away tiny metal fragments when the oil is drained. Though it comes in 10w-40, no 20w-50 versions. Perhaps one could add a small bit to the engine during an oil change? (say 4L 20-W50 and 1L castrol magnatec)

Personally I'd stick with a good quality classic 20/50 such as millers, castrol classic or valvoline vr1 and change it regularly.

it will not be good for your gearbox if a manual.

I put some in a mini twenty years ago, it was the only oil tight mini I've owned, it leaked everywhere and never stayed oil tight again!

20-50.

the main issue is lack of any Zink package for the gearbox.

Many moon ago Castrol was a client. At that time they were advertising their motors oils as having 'Liquid Tusngsten' . While on their site one I was able to speak with one of the chemists as this had me curious as to how they could make Tungsten in a liquid form, he merely chucked and said it was Liquid Bull Sh!t.

 

While I have found most Castrol Products over the years to be good, I don't feel any of the Motor Oils suit the Mini engine & Gearbox.

first of all I am no oil expert. I use magnatec for my newer engines (k-series and that rover 75 diesel) where its very good and minispares classic oil, gulf classic or castrol classic for my standard a-series engines.

I know that 20w-50 is the most common viscosity of oil to use in the a-series I would not think twice about using 10w-40 if I could find one with a suitable amount of zinc.

I have stopped using castrol classic even though I have been using it for years as I found out that the cheap minispares classic 20w-50 oil has lots more zinc in it that the castrols inadequate 800ppm. gulf classic also has a suitable amount.

for my racing a-series I use a castrol based racing oil called racing IVI which is a synthetic 25w-50 oil with 1800ppm of zinc. I am very pleased with this oil, no blue oil burning smoke when the oil is hot and no worn through main bearings.

if it does not have suitable ZDDP package it is as useless as the 10-40 with out a suitable ZDDP package.

Out here in Malaysia its hard to come by much choice. Im using Shell HX3 20w-50. The others that are readily available would be Caltex, Penzoil, Liqui Moly (insanely expensive), Elf and Castrol and some other brands I havent heard much of (for 20w-50 at least).

Anyone used Bosch 20w-50 before? Its a fair bit cheaper than the Shell I use.

After realising that a 20w50 oil is needed the only other question is whether the zddp (zinc) level is high enough. If it is not then the gearbox will suffer.

i doubt any of the oils here will have much zinc or phosphorus. will need to find an additive
