Export to the US stopped after 1967.

I am definitely not aware of Minis or Clubmans that had SU HS4 carbs fitted with charcoal canister - please correct me if I am wrong.

Probably not in the UK - I haven't looked but every Mini, Mini Van and Moke made in Aust from 1976 on, had them fitted. Even my Metro, which was imported by Leyland Aust for local market evaluation had one, though, being a HLE, it has a HIF38.

<Edit: Here's an under bonnet photo of the last model off our lines, known as a 1275 LS (basically same spec as the UK 1275 GT)

You can see the Charcoal Canister up near the brake master cylinder.

Rolf my good friend, never say never with these cars !!  I had no idea and was reasonably convinced that no mini ever had an EGR Valve either, however about a year ago, on this forum, one popped up. I think for the early Japanese Market >

Moke Spider with your wealth of knowledge and experience on all things mini I have to believe implicitly what you say - I know you guys down under on our bottom side of the world have always been rabid environmentalists and on a mini too :ohno:

Fascinating. Well I've learned something new. I did a search for images of South African Minis. Not one had a charcoal canister. Your answer makes sense now. :D If the hose/tube is is used in a different way on hundreds of examples you've seen there would be no reason to think it would be used differently somewhere else. I tried to look up when South Africa started with the emissions standards stuff. I couldn't find a date but it appears that they started much later than most of the other countries. Perhaps after Mini production ended in South Africa? My Japanese 89 has the canister.

By the way in my search I ran across mention of this on the Mini Mania site:

Title: Thanks for the Mini Memories: A South African Mini Story

Author: Ryno Verster

Publisher: Ryno Verster, 2007

ISBN: 0620390972, 9780620390972

Length: 255 pages

They say it is supposed to show all the differences between the South African builds and builds from other countries.
