So it has improved since spraying with silicon spray.  But taking it for 30 mile motorway drive (damp, no direct rain), I could feel it was losing power at times.  And when it did, the temperature needle went up (theory is build up of gas in cylinder = when it does combust, too much?).

So I will clean up the distributor now.  I cannot find instructions on this so will have to use commonsense.

Herr Otto designed the engine to have a valve that opened every other revolution, releasing pent up pressure.

If you are getting a build up of gas in the cylinder, may I suggest that you seek his advice.

So from my point of view, problem is all solved.  I went ahead and bought new leads, distributor cap, and the rotary component inside the distributor.  About 30 pounds and 30 minutes of work.  Improvements noted:

- massive difference in acceleration

- no misfiring

- no overheating (caused by misfiring/build up of fuel on eventual firing?)

- rain has no impact at all

- much more efficient on fuel (haven't measured exactly)

Just a brand new car really!  Thanks everyone :)
