Hey guys,

Ive got a 92 1275 Mini that ive owned for about 3 years. I daily drove it for about 4 months, but other than that its been sitting. It had some electrical issues before (speedo lights didnt work all the way and hazards made a weird noise) I am wanting to start fixing it up and driving it more now, but im having more eletrical problems.

I know basic mechanics when it comes to vehicles, but its limited. I want to learn more and bought this car as a learning experience to a certain point.

This is a video of whats wrong. Ive gotten some advice on minimania, com and went to order parts, but they charge an arm and a leg then charge even more for shipping, so i ordered from minisport.com I bought a new fuse box.....

Any help or advice would be helpful... I will take pictures do videos anything that will make your life easier to make my life easier to fix it. Im also willing to talk to someone on the phone/video call

I NEED HELP! with everything in my car.....

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum.

I'll say from the outset, I'm not experienced with your model but am with the earlier cars.

None the less, in regards to the issues with your Instrument Cluster, to me that appears that the Printed Circuit on the back of it has a few cracks in it. The only viable solution for that is a replacement Circuit Panel, though just check the plug for it is properly plugged in first.

I bought my mini for the same reasons as you and I had similar electrical issues as you are experiencing such as random things working / not working.

With all the various things happening, I suggest to take it step by step. Firstly, start at the fuse box and see if there are any blown fuses. Replace the fuses accordingly then test the instruments as you would under normal conditions. If the fuse blows again, then you likely have a short somewhere on that circuit, you just have to find it :P --Secondly, dismount the fuse box and check if there is any corrosion hidden under the panel and clean it accordingly. The corrosion could prevent circuits from not working.

Overall, it's going to be a long process, but it definitely sounds like there are multiple electrical issues so its hard to say its just one specific thing. Take it one step at a time. Keep us posted!

Im going to go through my entire engine bay and do a cleaning, remove some stuff clean it, reroute some wiring... just try to make it nicer, clean off terminals, hopfully that will take care of some problems

It'd be worth getting a haynes manual if you haven't already got one.

When cleaning bit's in the engine bay make sure you clean the earths and earth strap that goes from the engine steady bolt on the body to the engine. If it's in bad condition renew it. clean the connections for the headlights while you're at it which are under the bonnet slam panel.

The 4 way flasher may not be working due to the flasher relay being broken, I think this is located inside the car, then the directional indicators would then be located in the engine bay near the top of the bulkhead.

Does the ignition light (the red light) go off when all the electric bits (lights etc) are off? If it does then the red light is on in the video because the alternator needs more revs to cope with the power needed.

Test one thing at a time until you've fixed it, then move on.

There's the wiring diagram for your car here
http://www.theminifo...agrams-redrawn/

Scroll down and its the 92-96 power distribution for carb models . Looks like t he heater and wash wipe are on a common circuit so see if your wipers work. Also I would check all ground/earth points check there all good.
Looks like you've got a 92 British open classic . I'm just trying to sort the electrics on my 93 Italian job so i've found this diagram useful .

I'm thinking along the same lines as Moke Spider.

The ignition light sits between the battery and alternator and should go out when both are making roughly equal voltage. Since it stays on with the alternator apparently charging the battery the current has to be leaving that circuit somewhere.

Have a look at this thread for the fuse box and inline fuses http://www.theminifo...s-covered-data/  The white round inline fuses are original.

From memory, the terminal with no connector on the coil is correct.

The heater tap is as it should be as well, just hanging.

What does the label say on the red box attached to the inner wing?

Alex, im not sure where all the earths are exactly located. Im just cleaning like crazy lol. The ignition light stays on the entire time.

The hazard relay is one of the two on the bulkhead at the wiper motor, will have a purple/orange wire, check the inline fuse of the same colour.

Screen wash and heater is on the same circuit

Hey guys,

Ive got my engine bay pretty much stripped apart and working on cleaning all the electrical stuff (painting the block at the same time) anyways i was wondering if anyone uses electrical cleaners and dielectric grease on terminals. Ive got some tiny wire brushes that im hitting the bullet connectors with, i just dont want to do something that will cause me more pain than i am already in. Thanks.
