Sometimes, if you drive on a knackered bearing for a while it can damage the bearing houseing, makign it slightly out of shape. this means the new bearing generate play and wear far quicker than normal, so a new housing might be needed if this is a repeated thing.

Funny thing is the N/S front wheel bearing on my 90' Mainstream Mini Cooper has been changed a few times in the past decade, so maybe my bearing housing is damaged?

Some interesting points there. I'd also like to know where to get some cheap bearings from.

Mine tends to eat them fairly regularly. I normally get them at a reasonable price from various mini-suppliers. Got them from Rover once, i can't remember how much it was, well harsh though. £50 or something.

Hmm. At the risk of sounding a bit thick ;D

When you say bearing housing - do you mean the outer race or the part of the hub where the race is located?

I shall be doing both of mine V soon so I'm kinda interestred.

They would mean the inside of the hub as you get the outer races with the bearing kit. The outer races can spin in the hub and cause a machine like groove that looks like its meant to be there

Ahh. I did wonder...

I'll look out for that then. I guess it depends on how long you leave the bearing before replacing?
