Thanks.   I'm not quite sure what that chart is showing, but my needle - the BDK - appears the most "extreme" ?

The chart is showing "1000 minus the needle diameter in 10,000ths of an inch" of each of the 16 stations along the needle from idle to wide open, 1-16 respectively. The needle jet (aka the hole) is 1000/10,000 in diameter. The higher the line, the richer the mixture.

Thanks so much to everyone.

I think I'm going to try a BBW and a BDL to see if it improves it, but I'm also going to book in for a Mini Sport rolling road session to get it looked at properly, but don't think I'll make it down there for at least a month.

Hi,

I've plucked up the courage and had a look (never done anything to the carb except check the oil, I'm much better with computers!) - its a BDK

When putting the needle back in, there's a black plastic bit at the base of it with the spring, I just pushed it gently home until it was flush with the metal, and then tightened the screw - hope that was right, seems OK now.

Thanks for all comments, reading them all.

Rob, did you check the needle for wear when you had it out?

Hi, it looked like new to me, i can't remember exactly but i think the engine's done less than 10k miles since it was built. (I was meant to get the engine tuned after it was run in!)

Don't know where you are in Glasgow! but there used to be a guy in

Cardross on the main road to Helensburgh, that could tune SUs perfectly

by ear he worked for Turners back in the day when they were the people for

Carb repairs, back in the 70s we used the R/R in Gibbons on Kirklee Road,

long gone no, I would have thought there would be a R/R nearer than MiniSport.

but I suppose Carbon would have said if there was.

I've got virtually the same engine spec as you and I'm running a BDL which seems just about right. Not put it on the rollers but it runs well, mixture seems OK, pulls well, choke use is what you would expect and so is the economy.

Hi all,

Thanks for everyone's help with this.  My Mini is now on the BDL needle instead of the BDK.  My mechanic agreed with everyone above's advice, and has set it up, and it has pretty much transformed the drive.  Initially it seemed slower, but I don't think it is over all - the car is smoother and less lumpy, and less stinky too - it sailed through its MOT with this needle fitted.

- Rob
